From Sketch to Sacred Surface: The Ritual of Pattern Design

A collage of four intricate textile patterns inspired by celestial and natural motifs, featuring suns, moths, moons, geometric grids, and symbolic florals in earthy tones.

Designing a pattern is a sacred ritual. It’s more than art—it’s a form of storytelling, of grounding, of transformation. Each pattern begins with intention and evolves through movement, symbolism, and emotion that I find myself experiencing in my waking life.  I let my what resides in my mind to manifest in a visual form.

In my world, patterns aren’t just meant to decorate. They are designed to be lived with—woven into your rituals, your wardrobe, and your sacred spaces. Whether printed on swimwear, yoga mats, or home goods, every pattern I create tells a story from start to finish.

🌿 Where Patterns Begin: Nature, Energy, and Observation

Most of my patterns begin long before I sit down to draw. Inspiration often strikes during a morning walk, a quiet meditation, or a sunset spent under a wide sky.  As a mother these moments of solitude are what bring me back to myself.  I observe light, shapes in nature, sacred geometry, and admire patterns in real life.

I sketch loosely in my sketchbook/journal, anything to get my thought on paper whether it be, the wings of a moth, the layers of the moon, or the symmetry of plants. These sketches are the seeds from which each pattern grows. They reflect not just what I see, but how I feel.

✍️ From Sketchbook to Digital Pattern

Once I have the foundation, I move into digital creation. I primarily use Procreate for clean line work, flowing shapes, and symmetry tools that help refine the early stages of a pattern. Lately, I’ve also been experimenting with Adobe Fresco, especially for its vector line work so that I can cut tedious steps from my workflow. Vector artwork allows for an image, drawing or design to be scaled infinitely without losings its quality or getting pixelated/blurry.

This phase is intuitive. I play with form and flow, test repeating pattern segments, and experiment with color palettes until the pattern feels complete. I often rotate between iPad drawing and repeat pattern layout developing on Illustrator or Photoshop to see how the design is coming together in a seamless way. I also think its important to visualize how it might live on products and sometimes test out mock ups to make sure the pattern is working.

🔁 What Makes My Patterns Unique

In a fast-paced design world flooded with AI-generated art, I root my process in intentionality. Every pattern is hand-drawn and crafted from a place of presence in my emotional and spiritual journey. These aren’t just decorative motifs—they’re stories in visual form as a way to document my mindset, release any anxiety or sadness and transform it into something positive, or better yet, beautiful. Generally collections are birthed from a hero pattern or design, in this case The Papillon de Nuit - the start of it all. From there I redeveloped and pulled out details to create new complimentary patterns.

Each pattern carries a deeper message —

infused with energy and aligned with the spirit of the piece it adorns.

  • Solar Papillon pattern reflects transformation, symbolized through moths, moons, and soft symmetry.
  • Radial Sun pattern channels strength, vitality, and radiance.
  • The Web pattern reminds us of sacred connections and cosmic design.
  • Seeds of Change pattern grounds us in gentle growth and surrender.

🧘‍♀️ Patterns in Ritual and Everyday Life

My favorite part of the process is seeing each pattern come to life on a meaningful product. I design every pattern with the end use in mind—how it will feel in your hands, wrap around your body, or support your space.  My goal with products I create is not to increase consumerism, but rather inspire you to stem into the underlying purpose of the pattern or design in your life.  For example, learning to embody your power with the Le Tigre Blanket in winter months when you may not be feeling inspired, motivated, social etc.  Let the goods be your reminder and beautiful ally through these times.

🌙 Rooted in Meaning, Not Trends

My designs aren’t driven by trend cycles—they’re rooted in my own journey of spiritual growth and inner exploration. As I’ve learned to live more intentionally and against the grain, I’ve also discovered the power of creating my own trends—ones inspired by what I truly love, not by what I’m told to desire. Fast fashion has never aligned with my values, which is why I hope you feel the depth and care behind every slow, made-to-order piece I design in partnership with my suppliers. These designs are meant to grow with you.

Life is a constant unfolding—how we move through it, especially through the dark moments, is what shapes us. Darkness is inevitable, but our response to it is where beauty, joy, and love are born.

I believe in slow design: intentional, soulful creation that reconnects us to ourselves, to nature, and to one another.

Each pattern I create is a visual mantra—an affirmation woven through form, rhythm, and color.
